Today is the first time I see rain here in nearby Dallas, TX. It’s 9:30 in the morning and the rain is short and heavy, rain was expected for six hours and I expected six hours of continuous rain. Coming from the Netherlands this is usually what happens, but here it was quite different.

After getting ready I had another day of helping around the house. We still had some plumbing that needed to be finished, a tap for the shower broke and had to be replaced after the freezing cold weather. This job only took us about 10 minutes and the shower worked again. I don’t really mind helping, it makes time slow down in my experience and the more you get done in a day really gives a satisfying feeling.

We helped replace a sink after, for the neighbours, this took about thirty minutes and wasn’t too much trouble, I didn’t have much to do, there’s only so much space underneath a sink, I was able to hand some paper towels and black tape. The next stop was the chicken coop, besides the ten chickens they have, we also find six ducks in there living in harmony with the chickens. The chickens welcome us, but the ducks keep their distance and quack like we’re about to eat them all. We refill their water ponds and take some freshly laid eggs. Then we notice one duck is limping and tipping over like a student walking towards an Uber at five in the morning. There is a long piece of string caught around one of the duck’s legs. We catch the duck easily as it cannot run with only one leg and we luckily have a sharp Stanley blade with us, it takes a while but the duck is staying very still and lets us take the string off of him. We use something to clean the wounded leg and we’ll check again tomorrow to see if it’s healing well.
